tetekrefil.blogspot.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Many school administrators have yet to decide how to respond to stay-at-home advisories issued this week by Cuyahoga and Summit counties that encourage schools to be cautious about bringing students into classrooms because of the spike in coronavirus cases.

Some were too busy Thursday to even answer questions.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to school districts in both counties to see whether the stay-at-home advisories will alter student learning or allow for more staff members to work from home.

Here is what we found out about whether their plans are changing, or what we knew about their plans prior to the advisory:

Cuyahoga County

Bay Village City School District – The district previously decided to do all-online classes the week of Nov. 30. Superintendent Jodie Hausmann said the district will announce its plans for the following weeks on Dec. 3.

Beachwood City School District – Did not respond to a request for comment. The district previously offered online and in-person learning.

Bedford City School District – All online, with some career-technical, preschool and special-needs students attending in person. Students will not be there the week of Thanksgiving, and the administration will make a decision in the coming days about whether staff – including office workers, custodians and teachers – will return after Thanksgiving. Teachers have been working from their classrooms.

Berea City School District – Did not respond to a request for comment. The district’s website says students will be all remote on Nov. 23 and 24, with in-person learning set to resume on Nov. 30.

Brooklyn City School District – Brooklyn City Schools Superintendent Ted Caleris wrote a letter to families Thursday saying the district would do remote learning from Nov. 30 to Dec. 18, the final day of classes before winter break. The district has used a hybrid model that will be in effect through Friday. The format consists of four days a week in-person, with Wednesdays being a remote day for students and staff. The district has been in that format since Sept. 28. Caleris told cleveland.com in an email that the district hopes to return to its hybrid schedule following winter break if conditions allow.

From Nov. 23 to Dec. 23, all students, including special-needs students, will be learning remotely. He said they’ll determine in December if they’ll do any in-person learning in the new year. The first day back from winter break is Jan. 4.

Barberton City School District – Superintendent Jeff Ramnytz said the district currently offers online and in-person learning, with about a third of students all-online. Ramnytz noted the surge in cases after Halloween and said he is worried about a similar spike after Thanksgiving. The district is shifting to 100% remote learning for the first three days after Thanksgiving break - Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 - to allow families time to see if they experience any coronavirus symptoms.
