After nearly two years without a new episode of Stranger Things, fans are eager to get back to the Upside Down. On Thursday, Netflix released the second teaser for the upcoming fourth season, offering an ominous slice of Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) world. It also seemingly confirmed the rumored return of Matthew Modine as maniacal Dr. Martin Brenner.
The one-minute trailer, titled “Eleven, are you listening?” is set in a creepy institution for children, where they roam around in hospital gowns with shaved heads. The pint-sized patients are also encouraged to play board games, including chess and Connect Four. There’s even a Magic-8 Ball that reads, “Signs point to yes.” Then a man who looks an awful lot like Dr. Brenner appears, saying “Good morning, children.” They dutifully reply, “Good morning, Papa,” repeating the name that Eleven used to call Dr. Brenner in her childhood.
When the children tell him that they’re doing well, Dr. Brenner replies, “I’m glad to hear it. Because today, I have something very special planned for you.” Cue heavy breathing as the camera pans to a door marked “11.” That’s when Dr. Brenner asks, “Eleven, are you listening?” before her eyes immediately pop open.
Viewers may remember that Dr. Brenner was presumed dead after season one, which saw him fall during a Demogorgon attack. So the next season of the hit series could delve into Eleven’s origin story. We also know that David Harbour is returning as Hopper, following the character’s apparent onscreen death at the end of season 3. His role in the next season was the center of Stranger Things 4’s first trailer, titled “From Russia with Love.” It showed a freshly-shaved Hopper sitting in a snowy landscape, surrounded by Russian soldiers.
The long-awaited fourth season of Stranger Things is currently filming. Winona Ryder, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, and Maya Hawke are once again starring alongside Harbour, Brown, and Modine. They’ll also be joined by several fresh faces, including Jamie Campbell Bower (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald), Eduardo Franco (Booksmart), Joseph Quinn (Game of Thrones), and Robert Englund (the original Freddy Kruger), Deadline reports.
One thing that isn’t in the footage—a release date for the highly-anticipated fourth season, which has been billed as the “scariest” yet.
