Wisconsin bars reopening was top priority for residents, and many did - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

When the Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned Gov. Tony Evers' stay-home order Wednesday night, many residents had one thing on their mind: Bars.

Google searches for "bars" surged in Wisconsin at 5 p.m., just after the ruling came down.

And according to Google Trends data, 14 of the top 15 searches relating to the word "open" on Wednesday and into Thursday had to do with bars.

Many of those who were searching in hopes they could sit on a bar stool for the first time in two months got what they wanted.

Shortly after the court's decision, the Tavern League of Wisconsin told bar owners they could "OPEN IMMEDIATELY."

Some did.

The ruling left no guidelines in place for enforcing things like social distancing or capacity — and some bars took advantage of that.

Nick's Bar in Platteville went viral after tweeting a picture of the bar packed with the caption, "45 minutes after bars open in Wisconsin..."

Rookies Sports Pub in Stevens Point reopened Wednesday and posted Thursday morning that they would resume normal hours.

The bar said it would be providing extra sanitation stations and would enforce social distancing guidelines.

Friends & Neighbors bar in Appleton posted on its Facebook page for the first time in two years to let people know "We're open!"

The Iron Hog Saloon in Port Washington opened and thanked customers for support on its first night open in nearly two months.

Meanwhile in Milwaukee, many restaurant and bar social media pages posted Wednesday night that they would not open.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett also reminded local bars that a city ordinance was still in place, banning the opening of bars and restaurants.

RWB Milwaukee was one Milwaukee bar that seemed excited about the ruling, sharing a photo on Instagram with the caption "Who's ready to party?!"

The Instagram page said in the comments that patrons should stay tuned for when they would be able to reopen according to city of Milwaukee ordinances.

People on social media posted drinks at Limanski's Pub and The Buzzards Nest, both in West Allis. The two bars enjoyed one night of opening before Milwaukee County made its own ordinance Thursday morning, closing those bars again.

Another Milwaukee County bar, Moran's Pub in South Milwaukee, posted Wednesday that they look forward to opening, "but tonight is not the night."

More: Some bars and restaurants are open in Wisconsin. Others have decided it's still too risky.
