The Vikings have retooled their roster this offseason and plenty of new players are vying for spots on the depth chart.

On Saturday, the team decides spots on the 53-man roster. Which players will make the team? Which ones are out of luck? Sure, some will be kept on the practice squad, but some will have to look for other teams entirely.

With the way competition has panned out this year, there might be a few surprising names to be cut from the team. Here are some Vikings players who are in danger of not making it as training comes to an end:

WR Chad Beebe

Chad Beebe could be in trouble if he doesn’t climb the ranks of the wide receiver depth chart.

The Vikings have a plethora of enticing wideouts on their roster right now, some of whom can go about replacing at least a part of Stefon Diggs’ production.

Adam Thielen, Justin Jefferson and Bisi Johnson are presumptive locks. Last season, Minnesota’s initial 53-man roster had four receivers on it. If Alexander Hollins, K.J. Osborn and Quartney Davis have played well enough to earn spots, Beebe could be in trouble.

In the same boat as Beebe, Sharpe is a veteran wide receiver who may be out of a roster spot due to tough competition.

Maybe he played his way into a special teams role, or maybe he’s one of the better five or six receivers on the roster. But if he’s not, he might be on the outside looking in.

RB Ameer Abdullah

Abdullah probably won’t be too high up the running back depth chart. So then it comes down to whether he can beat out Osborn for the punt and kick returner positions.

If Osborn beats him out, then his odds of making the team all of sudden look bleak.

DT James Lynch

Lynch is only a rookie, so the team may put him on the practice squad.  That said, he has looked disappointing in training camp.

Sam Ekstrom of Zone Coverage said that “it doesn’t seem like James Lynch is going to make the impact many had hoped.” Ekstrom added that Lynch has been “overshadowed” in camp.

With the addition of Yannick Ngakoue to the defensive line, the Vikings may utilize Ifeadi Odenigbo more as the three-technique defensive tackle option. That could spell trouble for Lynch.

QB Jake Browning

Sean Mannion is coming off a season as the Vikings backup, and if I had to take a guess, I’d say that is likely to happen again.

Browning is one of four quarterbacks on the team. Last year, the Vikings kept just two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. However, Browning was put on the practice squad in 2019.

Now, however, the Vikings have taken a quarterback, Nate Stanley, in the seventh round of this year’s draft. He might be a more likely candidate to take that practice squad spot than Browning, unless the Vikings think Browning’s upside is way better.

Similar to Browning, it will be hard for Stanley to beat out Mannion for the backup spot at this point.

If the Vikings keep just two quarterbacks, my guess is the team goes with Kirk Cousins and Mannion. That doesn’t mean Stanley or Browning couldn’t earn a spot on the practice squad, though.
