BUFFALO, New York (KWWL) -- The naval ship bearing the name of one of Waterloo's most notable band of brothers is in danger of being claimed by the water, the same fate as its namesake.

The ship is currently docked at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park in Buffalo, New York, the largest inland naval museum in North America. The harsh Buffalo winters and the sharp drop in revenues from the pandemic have left the USS The Sullivans in a perilous state.

The park said winter weather has severely damaged the hull of the destroyer below the waterline. There is now significant amounts of water flooding into the ship and it has started to lean. If the leaks can't be stopped, the ship will sink.

Pumps are currently being used to remove water from the ship but aren't quite keeping up. The continuing cold in upstate New York could cause even more damage.

The ship is is need of $100,000 in emergency repairs just to stay afloat until long-term repairs can be done this summer.

As of 5 p.m. February 26, 2021 one day into the fundraising campaign, the Naval Park had reached a quarter of their goal.

To donate, visit their website here.

The USS The Sullivans was comissioned in September 1943 after brothers George, Francis, Joseph, Madison and Albert Sullivan died when the USS Juneau was sunk by a Japanese submarine in November 1942.

The ship served in World War II and Korea before becoming a training vessel and being decommissioned in January 1965. It was then donated to the Naval Park in 1977.
