GRAND HAVEN, MI - New warning signs are now at several piers and harbor structures along Lake Michigan in an effort to keep people off during storms that could sweep them into the water.
“Danger. Waves Flood Surface. Keep Off During Storms.” That’s the message on large, red signs recently placed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, Grand Haven Field Office.
So far, the signs are standing on the Lake Michigan shoreline next to piers and harbor structures in (from south to north) New Buffalo, St. Joseph, South Haven, Saugatuck, Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon, White Lake, Pentwater, Ludington, Manistee, Onekama, Arcadia, Frankfort, Leland, Greilickville, Charlevoix and Petoskey.
The signs are intended “to urge caution and safety around the Great Lakes,” The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a Facebook post.
2020 was a record year for Lake Michigan drownings with 56 deaths and an additional four drownings where the victim’s condition is unknown, according to The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. The tragedies included four incidents in which a person was swept off a pier into the unforgiving body of water.
