Warm, dry weather has already fueled at least one wildfire in New Mexico this week and forecasters are hoping a midweek storm will provide some relief to the drought-stricken state.

On Monday, Lincoln National Forest officials reported the start of the Three Rivers Fire less than a mile from the Three Rivers Campground on the back side of the White Mountains between Tularosa and Carrizozo.

Evacuation notices have been issued for the Ski Apache Area, Nogal Canyon and Bonito Canyon.

Eastern New Mexico will have more strong winds on Tuesday, said Randall Hergert, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Albuquerque.

“As the temperatures warm up, the humidities go back down, and we’ll see those strong winds combine with the dry and warm conditions to produce another round of critical fire weather conditions, this time limited to the eastern plains,” Hergert said.

“We could see some blowing dust, and could see some smoke concerns from this Three Rivers Fire.”

Albuquerque is forecast to reach a high of 67 degrees on Tuesday, with a 20% chance of precipitation.

A Wednesday storm system will bring cooler temperatures and rain to most of New Mexico.

“We should see some good showers and isolated thunderstorm coverage along the central mountain chain,” Hergert said.

Albuquerque is expected to have a low of 40 degrees and high of 62 on Wednesday. The metro area has an 80% chance of precipitation on that day.

Rain showers may linger in southeast New Mexico on Thursday as the storm exits the state.

Temperatures will soar this weekend and precipitation chances will plummet.

Albuquerque is expected to have high temperatures of 88 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.

Roswell and Clovis could reach temperatures in the low to mid-90s this weekend.
