DNR lists fire danger as extreme, very high for much of the state; red flag warning issued - WBAY

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says nearly the entire state is listed under either extreme or very high fire danger this weekend.

According to the DNR, a red flag warning has been issued due to the extreme fire danger for multiple counties, including some in the Action 2 News viewing area.

A red flag warning means the area is experiencing critical weather conditions which are ideal for wildfires. Those conditions include strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures.

The warning has been issued for the following counties:

• Adams
• Columbia
• Crawford
• Dane
• Dodge
• Grant
• Green
• Green Lake
• Iowa
• Jackson
• Jefferson
• Juneau
• Lafayette
• La Crosse
• Marquette
• Monroe
• Portage
• Richland
• Rock
• Sauk
• St. Croix
• Vernon
• Walworth
• Waupaca
• Wood

A Wind Advisory was issued earlier in the day Saturday for Fond du Lac, Dodge, Green and Sheboygan Counties. The advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. The National Weather Service says winds coming from the southwest will reach anywhere between 15-25 miles per hour, and gusts could reach up to 45 miles per hour in multiple counties.

State officials say all burning should be avoided, and burning is suspended with DNR-issued burning permits.

In addition, anyone who sees a fire is asked to immediately call 911.

All 72 Wisconsin counties have a fire risk of high, very high or extreme.

Waushara, Green Lake and Dodge Counties are all listed under “extreme” fire danger. All other counties in the Action 2 News viewing area are listed as having “very high” fire danger.

The DNR says “high” fire danger level has been designated for Ashland, Iron, Vilas and Oneida Counties.
