Who needs a road test? Many Wisconsin drivers allowed to obtain or renew licenses online - WIZM NEWS

The state of Wisconsin is planning to give thousands of drivers a break, if they’ve been delayed in getting licenses.

The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced Tuesday, that starting on May 11, it’s going to let many current drivers renew their licenses online, if they have licenses about to expire.

Motor vehicle offices have been closed around the state because of the virus pandemic, leading to a backup of about 80,000 pending license renewals or applications.

The agency will also let many teenagers qualify for a license without having to take a road test behind the wheel.

DMV Administrator Kristina Boardman suggested that many teens look forward to doing the physical road test as a “rite of passage,” as much as they anticipate actually getting a license.

Boardman, however, noted that about 98 percent of young drivers already pass the driving test on their first or second try, showing that the classroom instruction has been effective.

Older Wisconsin drivers needing to get their licenses renewed can also do that online beginning Monday, without having to visit a DMV.

Many drivers, who have had changes in their vision recently, may still need to have an eye exam when seeking a license renewal.
