Wild elk destroy 'Danger: Wild Elk' sign at Redwoods National Park - SFGate

tetekrefil.blogspot.com

Two wild elk, blatantly disregarding social distancing, locked antlers at Redwood National Park in a halfhearted duel that was caught on video.

The only casualty was a “Danger: Wild Elk” sign that the bulls kept drunkenly stumbling into. The post wobbled with every body slam, the sign clanked every antler jab.

Despite the collateral damage, the battle itself was a dud.

At this time of the year, Roosevelt elk males — which can weigh up to 1,000 pounds each — rarely engage in a full-blown fight. That’s reserved for the fall rut when they attempt to prove their dominance in front of the cows. Those showdowns are violent, dust-flying affairs that end quickly.

The two bulls in the video, which was recorded by a tourist at the park’s Prairie Creek Redwoods campground in Orick, were just sparring. Sparring occurs when one male presents his rack to another, who locks his antlers against it. Then a long, slow shoving match ensues with multiple time-outs.

There’s usually no decisive winner. The bulls are just honing their skills for the main event later in the year.

Although the video doesn’t show it, the “Danger: Wild Elk” sign was knocked completely off its post, according to a Monday post accompanying the video.
