Bumped offstage by the coronavirus pandemic, Milwaukee Opera Theatre has transformed its planned revival of "Doc Danger and the Danger Squad" into a four-part musical radio play, with episode one posting circa 3 p.m. Thursday.
If "radio play" is a foreign concept to you, think serial musical podcast.
Written and composed by Jason Powell, who also narrates the new radio version, "Doc Danger and the Danger Squad" is a friendly tribute to and send-up of pulp action adventures. Doc Danger (Briana Rose Lipor) and her squad, including Satellite Sally (Carrie Gray) and Jesia of the Jaguars (Stephanie Staszak), battle nemeses Professor Z (Eric Welch), Beetle Queen (Ana Gonzalez) and other baddies.
This being the 21st century, the characters comment on awkward elements of the pulp tradition, as when The Kid (Harper Navin) who's reading the adventure says, "Wow, there's a lot of women getting tied up in these stories."
MOT czarina Jill Anna Ponasik stage-directed the production, with keyboardist Donna Kummer. Foley artist Michael (Ding) Lorenz supplied the sound effects.
Episodes 2, 3 and 4 will be posted July 2, 9 and 16 on Milwaukee Opera Theatre's website for free streaming. MOT is soliciting donations online to defray costs. But artists will be paid whether or not the goal is reached, Ponasik said.
