Protesters demand removal of Columbus statue: About 200 people gathered in Downtown Syracuse on Saturday to demand the removal of the city’s statue of Christopher Columbus. Protesters from the Resilient Indigenous Action Collective, a group of people of Indigenous heritage, called the statue “traumatizing” and “disgusting” and that its presence shows support for genocide. They want the statue gone, and gone quickly.

“Five minutes of war”: Preparation for last weekend’s “Rye Day” celebration started weeks ago, when Ryedell Davis began hyping his annual public birthday bash to friends on Facebook. When the day arrived, the people came in droves; there was free food, live music, a dance party and, as is Rye Day tradition, lots of Silly String. Shortly before 9 p.m., the DJ played the last song of the night. Organizers started to pack up. But moments later, the fun turned to horror as at least six people pulled guns and started shooting.

Balter ready for rematch with Katko: Democrat Dana Balter has kicked off her campaign against Rep. John Katko — whom she lose to by 5 percentage points in the 2018 election in the 24th Congressional District — promising to make November’s election about President Donald Trump, healthcare and the Republican response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Few options for a festive Fourth: The coronavirus pandemic has thrown a giant wet blanket over nearly all community plans for July Fourth fireworks this year. One CNY town, though, is putting on a free drive-in fireworks display on the Fourth that might turn out to be the Syracuse area’s only local show.

SU fan gets a big surprise: On Thursday, Mike Dow sat down for a video interview, which he thought was part of a series of stories on Syracuse’s most ardent fans. The story was a ruse. Instead, Dow got a surprise when Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, all three SU assistants and SU guard Joe Girard all joined the video chat to surprise Dow, who is battling lung cancer. Watch the video.

“Everybody’s devastated”: Onondaga Community College athletes received bad news last week; the school was canceling all fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic; the decision impacts 105 OCC athletes on six teams.

Cuomo: Fall school openings at risk: Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday that in-person school reopenings in New York in the fall — both for young children and college-aged students — are at risk if the coronavirus continues to spread in other states. “If this continues across the country ... kids are going to be home for a long time.”

Coming to the rescue: On Friday, Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced plans to open two Syracuse City pools in July, and turned to the public for help in raising money to open more. In 48 hours, more than 150 people had stepped up and about $13,000 was raised.

Some restaurants open, some don't: Some Central New York restaurants have finally reopened their indoor dining rooms, under the restrictions in force as part of New York state's latest phase of reopening. Not everyone has thrown the doors open, though. Some have chosen to keep their dining rooms closed for now. Here's why.
