A burst of warm air is going to move into southwest Michigan this afternoon and tomorrow. It will make you want to go to the beach. But at the same time that warm air will come with stiff winds and dangerous waves.
From Ludington and the beaches of Mason County southward to the Indiana border, dangerous swimming and water conditions are expected to develop this afternoon.
High wave action, strong currents and dangerous swimming conditions will develop between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. today and last into sometime Thursday afternoon. The strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water. High waves can sweep people off piers, as piers may be heavily swamped by waves.
The southwest winds at 15 to 25 mph late today through noon Thursday will build three to five foot waves. Most drownings on Lake Michigan occur in three to five foot waves.
South sides of breakwalls will be the most dangerous places to swim. Stay out of the water. If you are still compelled to go swimming, make sure you wear a very good life jacket.
Otherwise we may be writing about you on Friday on MLive, but you won’t be here to read it.
The wind forecast above for Thursday morning shows where the strongest winds will occur - from Muskegon to South Haven.
The highest waves Thursday morning are also expected in that same stretch from Muskegon to South Haven.
Friday will likely be cloudy from the start with numerous thunderstorms developing at some point. Saturday will have a fairly brisk northwest wind. Sunday will likely be your next beach day, but with cooler temperatures in the 70s.
