LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A year ago, a Winchester man was hit by a car while he was in a crosswalk. Now, a friend says more high visibility signage is needed at those crosswalks, but he’ll have to go through the city and the state.

“We’re going to go for a walk, we’re going to wander around, we’ve got a couple of signs printed up to bring some awareness some of the issues that we are facing with pedestrian safety in downtown Winchester,” Chad Walker said.

Walker and his foot soldiers from local businesses are in this crosswalk on US 60 to make a point.

“So what I proposed personally to the city of Winchester was I will at my own expense fix every crosswalk and will paint it with like the ladder stripes design,” Walker said.

He wants better visibility for crosswalk signage. It would cost Walker around $10,000 to fix 14 crosswalks in the city. The reason for all this is for for longtime Winchester resident Bob Tabor. A year ago on a dark rainy night, Tabor was struck by a man driving a pickup truck while he was in the crosswalk. The 79-year-old was in critical condition.

“Unfortunately like with the signage here it’s great, the signs there, but it is underneath an overhang. This light rarely works.”

The city of Winchester said OK to Walker’s plan, but this intersection is maintained by the state and the Department of Transportation would have to oversee the project. Walker says he’s reached out to Frankfort but, he hasn’t heard back.

Tabor’s daughter says her father broke his pelvis, had several facial fractures, brain bleeds and was in ICU for a week. He’s doing better but moving slower.

The driver was not charged.
