In our show "Correspondence", we explore how the world is coping with the twists and turns of 2021, amid the consequences of Covid-19 and beyond. FRANCE 24 brings you a selection of original reports from our correspondents and teams around the globe.
Our reports:
>> In Brazil, the traditional Rio Carnival processions have had to be cancelled because of Covid-19. The pandemic has killed more than 236,000 people across the country. This year, samba schools and Brazilians have had to adapt to a virtual version of festivities. Tim Vickery, Laura Damase, and Mariam Koné report.
>> In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has authorised the use of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, even though the European Medicines Agency hasn't yet vetted it. Is this just another provocation from one of the EU’s most eurosceptic leaders, or does the country really need the jab? Gulliver Cragg and Balint Bardi report.
>> In Germany, the sanitary crisis is hurting an industry that's also a national treasure: beer. With bars and restaurants closed, breweries are struggling to survive. Some have started selling over the internet to make ends meet, but many will disappear without a substantial government handout. Nick Spicer, Anne Mailliet and Willy Mahler report.
>> And in DR Congo, a group of local farmers are producing gouda cheese in the "Switzerland of Africa", the Kivu hills. Our correspondents Clément Bonnerot and Juliette Dubois have tasted the highly popular cheese and say it's just as good as the Dutch original.
