Hot and dry weather will persist across northern California and keep our fire danger elevated this week. Dangerous heat returns late this week and is expected to continue through early next week. Our forecast continues to be dominated by high pressure off to our east that is building west into northern California. Hot and dry conditions will result in elevated fire danger today, and locally stronger winds will also be likely in Modoc County this afternoon and evening. A Red Flag Warning for high fire danger has been issued for Modoc County from 3pm this afternoon through 9pm tonight. Dry fuels, low humidity, and gusty southwest winds will be the driving factors in that Red Flag Warning today. We have clear skies over northern California this morning, and it will be another day of sunny conditions ahead for our region. There will still be some impacts to our air quality in areas closest to our active fires today. Temperatures are starting out in the 60's to 70's in the valley, 60's in the foothills, and upper 40's to lower 60's in our mountain zones for the start of your Wednesday. Light winds out of the northeast are being observed this morning, but south winds will kick in again as we head into this afternoon. Humidity is projected to end up in the 8 to 23 percent range in the valley, but will be lower in areas closest to the Nevada and Oregon borders this afternoon. High temperatures are projected to end up in the 98 to 106 degree range in the valley, while foothill and Sierra locations end up in the mid 80's to mid 90's, and the Northern Mountains top out in the mid 90's to lower triple digits this afternoon. Our fire danger will stay in the moderate to high range due to the dry conditions.
Thursday looks very similar to Wednesday, but will more than likely end up slightly hotter for most areas. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for portions of Siskiyou and Modoc Counties from 2pm through 8pm Thursday as we'll have dry and locally windy conditions in those areas during that time. Temperatures will continue to climb on Friday, and that is when an Excessive Heat Watch is set to take effect in the valley, foothills, and several mountain areas. The Excessive Heat Watch is set to be in effect from 11am Friday through 9pm Monday night for the valley, foothills, and some mountain areas. Trinity, Siskiyou, and Modoc Counties are set to be under the Excessive Heat Watch from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. This will more than likely be upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning as we get closer to Friday. Temperatures in the valleywill end up in the 106 to 112 degree range on Friday afternoon, while most foothill and mountain areas top out in the 90's to lower triple digits.
It's going to get even hotter this weekend. Projections put high temperatures in the valley in the 110 to 115 degree range for both Saturday and Sunday, with overnight low temperatures only dipping into the mid 70's to lower 80's both mornings. Mountain and foothill areas will have high temperatures in the mid 90's to around 105 degrees both days this weekend. We'll also stay dry and sunny, with south winds in the 10 to 15mph range. The heat persists through at least early next week, but high temperatures are not expected to be as hot as the weekend on Monday. We'll still have the potential for high temperatures up to around 111 degrees on Monday afternoon in the valley. We'll then see temperatures dropping by a few degrees through the middle of next week. There is no rain in sight, but the good news is that we also do not have any wind events looking likely through your extended forecast either.
