Those exploring Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, may see the white ibis (Eudocimus albus).

The white ibis is a wading bird found on Pocosin Lakes Refuge as well as other regional wildlife refuges and on neighborhood lawns.

It’s not uncommon to see a flock of ibis walking and poking their bills into the mud or soil searching for a meal.

In the water or mud, they search for crabs, marine worms, crayfish, fish and a variety of invertebrates. On the ground, they may push into the soil for earthworms or they might grab snails, lizards and frogs.
