Citing extreme fire danger, Chelan County commissioners have ordered the closure of Horse Lake Road in Wenatchee.
The road is a popular launching place for hikers in the Wenatchee Foothills.
The closure came after a resolution passed by commissioners Tuesday.
According to a press release from the county, “Chelan County Code 8.32 affords the Board of County Commissioners the power to determine that such an extreme hazardous conditions exist or that other public safety concerns exist that demand closure of any county roads or portions thereof to travel by the general public.”
Chelan County Fire Marshal Bob Plumb said fire danger remains at “extreme.”
“Closing Horselake Road is a proactive measure,” Plumb said. “The over-whelming majority of wildfires are human caused, and the Horse Lake Reserve is a popular local recreation area. We don’t want a wildfire in one of our community’s most treasured natural areas.”
