Letter: Climate change puts our future in danger - Chico Enterprise-Record

Scott Paulo was right to call BS on Anthony Watts; there’s no question that anthropogenic (human caused) abrupt climate disruption is real and puts our children’s future in danger.

Consider global average surface temperature (GAST), which has been rising so rapidly that species, including our own, don’t have time to adapt. The rise in GAST has been compared to a human fever: one degree above normal, you don’t feel so great, while two, you feel positively bad. GAST is quickly approaching two degrees C above pre-industrial (1750) baseline; our planet is noticeably ill.

At three degrees above normal, you feel terrible; three degrees C above baseline is catastrophic for the biosphere upon which we all depend. At four degrees above normal, a human can die; at four degrees C above baseline, most plants no longer photosynthesize and human habitat has long since disappeared. Already, substantial crop failure and decreased production are observable around the world.

Also concerning are the Arctic and its exponential loss of ice, with a concomitant loss of albedo (sunlight reflected back out to space) and the ongoing emergence of positive feedback loops. And there’s the destabilization on methane hydrates (methane being a worse greenhouse gas than CO2) as well as the acidifying of the world’s oceans. These phenomena and many others do not bode well for the biosphere– or humans and other life forms.

A significant body of empirical data makes clear the accelerating impacts of anthropogenic abrupt climate disruption. These impacts threaten all life on earth.
