On Friday, staff with the Umpqua National Forest moved the fire level to Very High as indices show increasingly hot, dry conditions in the forecast and a large influx of forest visitors recreating on the forest.

Umpqua National Forest Deputy Fire Management Staff Officer Terri Brown said “We have had no rain and a lot of hot dry weather which has dried out forest fuels”. Brown said that, combined with the higher number of visitors that have been seen this summer, are why the fire danger level moved to Very High.

Mark Turney of the Forest Service said every year, fire officials see a spike in human-caused fires from unattended campfires, fireworks, dragging tow chains, driving on dry grass, and the dumping of hot ashes and barbecue coals. Turney said this year alone, 86 percent of all wildfires in Oregon have been human caused.

The Umpqua National Forest remains at a Personal Use Restriction level 1 and an Industrial Fire Precaution Level of 3.
