Massachusetts health officials reported 429 new coronavirus cases and 68 more deaths on Wednesday, and many indicators such as testing capacity and positive test rates are showing improvement as the state continues to flatten the curve.

The three-day average of coronavirus daily deaths has dropped from 137 at the start of May to 53 now, a decrease of 66%. The 68 new deaths bring the state’s COVID-19 death toll to 7,152, the state Department of Public Health announced.

Overall, the statewide coronavirus hospitalization total has declined by 53% since May 5, despite a slight uptick on Wednesday of 27 patients, bringing the state’s COVID-19 hospitalization total to 1,684.

Dr. Todd Ellerin, director of infectious diseases at South Shore Health said, “It’s everything we hoped for in a declining epidemic, so we can say the epidemic has significantly declined in Massachusetts.”

The state has logged 101,592 total cases of the highly contagious disease, an increase of 429 confirmed cases since Tuesday and 4 new probable cases.

At least 1,684 people in Massachusetts are currently being hospitalized for the coronavirus. There are 393 patients in the intensive care unit, and 263 are currently intubated.

The highest peak of Massachusetts coronavirus hospitalizations was 3,965 on April 21. The three-day average of the number of coronavirus hospitalizations has gone from 3,707 on May 1 to 1,696 now, a decrease of 53%.

“It’s going in the right direction, it’s exactly what we need. We have fewer cases, fewer hospitalizations, fewer deaths and more surge capacity, it’s exactly what we needed,” said Ellerin.

There are now just 6 hospitals operating under surge capacity, compared to a peak of 21 in early May.

An additional 8,362 tests have brought the state’s total to 614,133 tests and puts testing capacity indicators into “positive trend.”

The seven-day weighted average of the state’s positive test rate has declined from 15.5% on May 1 to 5.9% now, also indicating a positive trend, as noted by DPH.

Middlesex County has the most confirmed cases in Massachusetts with 22,403 cases, followed by Suffolk County with 18,733 cases.

The state reported 21,785 residents and health care workers at long-term care facilities have now contracted the virus, with 350 facilities reporting at least one case of COVID-19.

Of the state’s 7,152 total coronavirus deaths, 4,447 deaths are connected to long-term care facilities.

Across the country, more than 1.8 million Americans have had coronavirus and more than 105,000 have died, according to a Johns Hopkins University map.

Worldwide, there have been nearly 6.5 million cases and more than 382,00 deaths.
