The Pennsbury School District plans to furlough up to 200 members of the support staff.
With virtual learning approved into 2021, the school board voted unanimously to furlough paraprofessionals in level I and II, bus drivers and transportation aides, school aides, teacher aides, hallway aides, health room aides, instructional aides, library aides, management assistants, and a lifeguard. The furloughs become effective starting later this month.
“The specific employees to be furloughed in each job category will be determined by seniority in consultation with the Pennsbury Educational Support Professional Association (PESPA),” the school board agenda said.
“This is a very hard move. It’s hard to do because it impacts a lot of people who are our partners in the school district,” school board member Joshua Waldorf said.
School board member Gary Sanderson said he hopes the district “makes it as least painful as possible.” He said he hopes the district will look at health benefits and see if Pennsbury can allow the furloughed staff to keep them until the staff is brought back.
“We all hope this is a very temporary thing,” school board member Chip Taylor said.
PESPA President Marla Lipkin said the district has “committed to bringing everyone back” once school resumes a more normal format.
“The board and administration have worked tirelessly and continuously with PESPA to make sure and ensure our employees are confident that when students return that they will return,” Lipkin told LevittownNow.com. “This was never intended to cut corners. This is hitting the pause button.”
Lipkin said the furloughs will be tough, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created “extraordinary times.”
“They’re going to bring them back as soon as students come back. Teachers can’t teach if the students can’t get there.”
