More than 22,000 people have voted in Onondaga County three weeks before the Nov. 3 election.

The 56,500 people who have been given absentee ballots so far in Onondaga County are filling them out and getting them back to the elections board quickly, Onondaga County Board of Elections records show.

Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard has created a voter dashboard for readers to track absentee ballot activity each day. We will also start updating early voting numbers after Oct. 24, when polls open for in-person, early voting.

Here are the latest numbers, reported at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Users of our mobile apps can view the dashboard here.

So far, enthusiasm in voting by absentee is high among Democratic voters in the county.

About 51% of people who requested absentee ballots are Democrats; 21% are Republicans.

Democrats make up about 39% of all enrolled voters, compared to 28% for Republicans and 26% for voters who are not affiliated with a party.

The deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 27 for people who apply online, postmark, email or fax the application. The deadline to apply in person at the board of elections is Monday, Nov. 2, the day before the election.

Absentees must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and arrive at the elections board by Nov. 10.

More people than ever are expected to vote by absentee ballot this year because it is the first time everyone is allowed to vote by absentee, even if they are healthy and available to vote in person.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a law Aug. 20 that allows voters to request absentee ballots because of concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

Voters can check to see if the ballot was received on the elections board website.

Early in-person voting starts Oct. 24.

The Onondaga County Board of Elections is at 1000 Erie Blvd. West, Syracuse. The phone number is 315-435-8683.
