COLLEGE STATION – Nearly halfway through Texas A&M’s 10-game regular season, the eighth-ranked Aggies could benefit quite a bit if old rival Texas continues getting its act together starting this weekend at No. 6 Oklahoma State.
Should the Aggies take care of business against upstart Arkansas at Kyle Field on Halloween night and the Longhorns pull what registers as a mild upset in Stillwater, Okla., A&M would move up at least one spot in Associated Press top 25 on Sunday.
While the AP poll is not the College Football Playoff ranking, it certainly would help the Aggies’ cause if they were in the top four of the AP when the CFP is determining the final four of the CFP. So, via the wonders of The Twitter, I asked if Aggies could bring themselves to root for the Longhorns, even nearly a decade after they last played football. Most apparently cannot.
I didn’t include the lone “nopes” and “no ways” and “nahs” and other descriptive few-worded responses, but they numbered at least in the 40s at last count. A sampling of the longer responses, and sorry I could not include all, as always some submissions edited for brevity and clarity:
The Longhorns will win, giving them just enough self-confidence to be angry when they lose to Kansas State. – Matthew Loerch
No way I will ever root for Texas! Oklahoma will take care of Oklahoma State anyway. – @GusMcCrae8
I want to see the worst football game ever played – 18 turnovers, people tripping over themselves, a (horrible) performance from both quarterbacks. A 4-3 final score with OSU “winning.” A game where no one in their right mind would say OSU is a decent team and ‘t.u.’ still loses. – @bdavidsonlamb
BZ: One can dream, I suppose, but wouldn’t hold my breath on this scenario.
True fans want what’s best for their team. Otherwise you hate another team more than you love your own. I get that some argue over the meaning of “root for.” As an Aggie, I hope Texas wins (and keeps Tom Herman). – Mike Eheman
No. Aggies need to win – don’t worry about anyone else. – @aggiebradley
You always root for Oklahoma State or Baylor to whip Texas. Let OSU stumble somewhere else down the road. – @mysmithereens
No. Situations like this take care of themselves. Go Pokes! – @TheBustedFlush
Nope. OU will take care of OSU later in the season. Between Kansas State/Iowa State/Oklahoma/Oklahoma State and Texas, they will eat each other as this thing “toodles” along. – @Pashtunwally
I’m good with whichever outcomes results in a longer stretch of mediocrity in Austin. If that means the Longhorns win and secure Herman’s job for another year or two, so be it. – Mike Koen
I’ll root against Oklahoma State during Bedlam, but not this weekend. Go Pokes. – Ryan McAdams
Aggies move up a spot, Horns keep Herman for another week. Win-win. – @JameyBradley
The rankings will sort themselves out. Oklahoma State will lose (at some point), and I’d rather it not be at the expense of the current dumpster inferno on the 40 Acres. – Roy May
It’s pure puke to root for the Longhorns, but Saturday I’ll have my bag in hand. – David Levenstein
BZ: Gross.
You do know they have more games after this week, right? Oklahoma State can lose to Oklahoma or anyone else. I will root for the Pokes this weekend. – Coach T
BZ: Seems like you’d want to move up those rankings sooner rather than later, with half the regular season gone after Saturday.
Oklahoma State? No business being ranked in the top 10. I’m sure Texas beats OSU and then Texas “will be back” and subsequently the Horns will be ranked No. 11. – Heath Poole
I’m clearly in the minority, but I want Texas to win. Not only will it move A&M up and give us a better chance at the playoffs, but hopefully it will make UT hold on to Herman for another year or two. – @hsfootballvet24
BZ: My conclusion: Texas A&M and Texas need to play football again. Annually on campus around Thanksgiving.
