How many times did you think the Seahawks had either won or were going to win Sunday’s game in Arizona?
Seahawks lose in OT: Recap | Quick hits | 710 reacts
When Tyler Lockett scored on fourth-and-2 from the 3-yard line to give the Seahawks a 34-24 lead with 6:50 to go? That was Time No. 1 for me. And how about that Pete Carroll call to go for it on fourth down instead of taking the field goal to go in front 30-24?
Time No. 2 is when they won the coin flip in overtime as Geno Smith correctly called tails. I figured Russell Wilson would find a way to end the game by leading the Seahawks on a touchdown drive, but Arizona’s only two sacks of the night occurred on that possession.
Time No. 3 was when Arizona kicker Zane Gonzales missed a 41-yard field goal in OT. At that point, you had to guess that Wilson would get Seahawks kicker Jason Myers in position to win with a field goal of his own. But Wilson’s third interception of the night changed all of that.
When Gonzales got a chance for redemption, he made the most of it, kicking the game-winning 48-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in overtime.
It’s hard to look at the bigger perspective after a nearly four-hour game in which the Cardinals never led until Gonzales made his kick. Tyler Lockett should have been celebrating his 200-yard night and congratulating DK Metcalf for stopping Budda Baker from turning an interception into a 97-yard pick six.
On a night filled with amazing and improbable plays, Metcalf turned in the biggest one by tracking down Baker, who had a head start, and catching up to him and tackling him at the Seattle 7-yard line. It would have been one thing to momentarily stop the Cardinals from getting a touchdown, but Arizona came up empty after failing to score, going four-and-out inside the Seahawks’ 10-yard line.
At 5-1, the Seahawks still lead the NFC West, but it’s now an awfully crowded division with Arizona at 5-2, the Rams at 4-2 and the 49ers at 4-3.
The biggest negative takeaways? Chris Carson’s foot injury that prevented him from playing in the second half and may sideline him even longer. And the Seahawks did not come up with a sack, leaving them with nine in six games, a pace for 24 this season, worse than the 28 they recorded last year.
They need to address that issue, and maybe it will help this week against the 49ers when Jamal Adams returns from his groin injury and defensive tackle Snacks Harrison makes his Seahawks’ debut.
