Jason Gough's forecast: For many, the coldest morning yet - Times Union

tetekrefil.blogspot.com

For many areas, it is the coldest morning of the season but if you managed to get your garden through it, you'll be good through the upcoming week. Speaking of which, we'll have more clouds than sun overall with a few shower opportunities. The best areas for said opportunities will be north and west of the Capital District as temperatures slowly rise through the week.

Lastly and for your Debbie Downer portion of the forecast, today's sunset is at 6:07. Next Sunday's will be at 5:55 and through the coming week, we'll lose almost 20 minutes of daylight.

Today

It's a cold start to the 3rd Sunday in October, with temperatures in the mid 20s to the middle 30s. The spots in the 30s have kept a light southeast breeze around and will escape a freeze. Skies are clear, with clouds, for now, confined to central and western New York. Temps out that way are in the low 50s, a sign of things to come for us in the mornings ahead.

Skies will stay clear through this morning with some high clouds spilling in through this afternoon. Temperatures will quickly be on the rise as we get through this morning with afternoon highs ranging from 50 to the low 60s. A southerly breeze will get going into the afternoon with some gusts around 30, which will also help to boost those temperatures.

Those clouds are associated with an upper level storm that will affect our weather for the first half of the week as a cold front approaches and stalls to our north. The front will be close enough overnight to kick off a few light spotty showers in the Adirondacks, but the rest of us will just stay mostly cloudy, dry and not nearly as chilly as this morning. Lows will range from the upper 30s to the upper 40s.

Tomorrow into Mid Week

Clouds will be in place for the day tomorrow. Rain and showers will fall from time to time in the Adirondacks and out the Mohawk Valley, while only a spotty shower or 2 will make it as far south and east as the Capital District. So, more of us than not will stay dry tomorrow under a cloudy sky with highs in the 50s and low 60s.

With clouds in place tomorrow night, it'll be even milder overnight and into Tuesday, with temps only falling off about 10 degrees or so. A few scattered showers will fall from the Mohawk Valley north and west, too.

Tuesday will be a mild one. The stalled front looks to retreat a bit north through the day, which will bring milder air in and even a bit of humidity (not like big time, but dewpoints will rise to the low 50s). We'll have a few spotty showers from the morning into the early afternoon before some breaks of sun show up. Highs will be pushed into the 60s in more areas with a few upper 60s down the Hudson Valley.

After a milder Tuesday night, Wednesday will follow suit. We'll still have more clouds than sun and a few showers from Albany north and west. Some heavier showers may fall over the Adirondacks but that'll about do it. Highs will top out in the middle 50s to the upper 60s across the area, with those 50s confined to the higher elevations north of Albany.

We'll see more sunshine and keep with the mild temperatures as we close out the work week. Thursday will see 60s while some spots make a run at 70 on Friday.

As a reminder, we're not going to be in Washington Park this year for the Making Strides Walk, another huge bummer brought on by this virus. That said, we can’t and won’t allow progress to be put on hold because of the pandemic. At risk are more and better treatments and discoveries that will improve and save lives. I hope you can stop by in person or virtually to join Benita and me later this morning at the Capital Center in Albany. All the details are here, and you can sign up too.

Hope to see you there! And besides, where else can you see a grown man in a hot pink suit? And if you can't make it or don't feel comfortable doing so, that's totally cool. There are other opportunities to join in on the action not only tomorrow but throughout the month. Again, all details and options are here.
