Avalanche Warning: Danger Extreme For Salt Lake Area Mountains - ksltv.com

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After two days of snowfall, avalanche dangers for mountains in the Salt Lake area are now at extreme levels, and natural and human-triggered avalanches would be “unsurvivable,” officials say.

According to the Utah Avalanche Center, the danger is extreme on all aspects and elevations.

“Avoid being under or near any steep slope,” writes forecaster Trent Meisenheimer. “Even very small slopes can bury a person.”

UAC reports that natural and human-triggered avalanches are certain, and unusual avalanches are possible in atypical terrain on atypical aspects and elevations.

Under the “extreme” danger level, avalanches may run historic distances and create new avalanche paths. They will be fast-moving, far-running and destructive. They may also reach or occur in places not normally affected by avalanches, according to UAC.

The warning is in effect through 6 a.m. Thursday.

Avalanche dangers remain high for mountains in the Logan, Ogden, Uintas, Provo, Skyline and Southwest areas. Moab and Abajos mountain areas are at considerable danger for avalanche.
