I’ve lived in Santa Cruz 37 years. I walk a lot. The respect drivers show pedestrians has plummeted. Recently, while walking in crosswalks, two women were mowed down in broad daylight by inattentive drivers. In one of these tragedies, the Sentinel reported “no evidence of driver negligence.” How’s that possible? California Vehicle Code states “drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian crossing the road within any marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”
A few years ago, I was hit in a crosswalk. The driver’s first words: “I didn’t even see you.” Now, I stand on the curb, staring drivers down, awaiting a complete stop. Most don’t even slow down. Many who do seem put out that I didn’t start walking while they decelerated, as if protecting my life is inconvenient. Heads up, Santa Cruz — your life is at risk every time you step into a crosswalk.
