Fierce Santa Ana winds may create hazardous driving conditions — and wildfire danger — this week in the Los Angeles area, forecasters are warning.
Los Angeles and Ventura counties are under a fire weather watch from Wednesday through Friday as the region's infamous Santa Ana winds develop. The warm, gusty winds form when high pressure builds in the desert regions to the east. As the winds push toward California, they gain heat and intensity.
The peak winds are expected from Wednesday afternoon through Thanksgiving morning, prime driving time for people heading to holiday festivities. Gusts of 30-50 mph are expected, with the possibility of 60-70 mph winds in the mountains and foothills.
"Forecasters urge travelers, especially those driving high-profile vehicles, to use caution when traveling in the area," AccuWeather meteorologists wrote Tuesday. "Those planning to travel for Thanksgiving should exercise extreme caution and plan for extra time to get to their destinations. Not only will crosswinds be dangerous, but the wind can blow dust, which can cause visibility levels to drop quickly."
Low humidity is also expected in the region, another competent in high fire danger. With blustery winds and low humidity, any sparks can quickly turn into large blazes. "Use extreme caution with any fire source," the National Weather Service's Los Angeles office cautions.
Although it is nearly December, wildfires are still regularly starting in Southern California. On Sunday, an off-road vehicle allegedly started a brush fire in Riverside that threatened a number of homes.
