New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list after testing positive for the coronavirus. That means he won’t play against the Kansas City Chiefs this week and he might be in danger of missing next week’s game against the Denver Broncos, too.

The Broncos are scheduled to face the Patriots in eight days on Sunday, Oct. 11. According to the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols, a player who tests positive may return 10 days after the initial positive test if he is asymptomatic.

Newton’s return could be sped up to five days if he “receives two consecutive negative PCR virus tests at least 24 hours apart within that five-day period.” So if he quickly passes two tests, Newton could be activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list by Thursday, Oct. 8. It’s impossible to predict how long it could take for Newton to pass a pair of tests.

Denver might face Brian Hoyer or Jarrett Stidham on the road in Week 5.
