A one-bid Mountain West

The dream of a four-bid Mountain West is long but now the dream from a multi-bid league might be gone. San Diego State is in the field and is looking like they will be around a six to an eight seed, but odds are on the higher end.

The reason the conference could be down to fewer teams and not more is due to a few bid thieves. Georgetown making a Big East run and winning its tournament and also Oregon State winning the Pac-12 put a squeeze on those bubble teams. One other team that could make it difficult for a Mountain West team to make the field is if Cincinnati upsets Houston in Sunday’s AAC final.

The rest of the league is in question. Boise State not making the semifinals pretty much knocked them out of the field. There are some bracket projections have them on the edge and one of those first few teams out. Odds are that the Broncos are out.

Colorado State is in the mix and while they are 4-2 against Q1 teams and have no bad losses. They have a NET rating of 51 which might be on the low end to get a bid. The Rams not making the Mountain West final might be a reason to exclude them from the field of 68. ESPN’s latest bracket projections after Saturday’s action has them as the third team out.

In those same projections, Utah State is the last team in the field. The Aggies have a NET rating of 41 and are in decent shape with that rating. They do have a pair of Q3 losses that hurt them and are 2-4 in Q1 wins. So, there are some positives and a few negatives for the Aggies at-large chances.

With a handful of bid thieves, these Mountain West teams will be holding their collective breath when the bracket is revealed on Selection Sunday.
