Heading outside to social distance? Frostbite a constant danger - WKOW

MADISON (WKOW) -- Temperatures will drop a bit later this week, so doctors want to remind you frostbite is a constant danger this time of year.

With COVID-19 this year, you may think you're being safer enjoying drinks on an outdoor patio, but stay bundled up and try not to drink too much.

"Alcohol alters our perception of temperature and can make you feel warm when you're actually losing heat really quickly," said Dr. Alexandra Lacey, with the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Signs of mild frostbite include hands or feet turning pink or red with normal sensation restored.

If they're purplish or numb, despite warming up, this is a sign of severe frostbite that needs medical attention.
