JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WVLT) -- From 100 year floods to 100 year wildfires, until now no one was responsible for looking at historical weather data that could warn of impending dangers in the state of Tennessee.
Now the State Climate Office is open to monitor the past weather to look at patterns that could lead to dangerous events.
“Economic development folks transportation folks that really need climate data to understand the risks and vulnerabilities, and to kind of better plan for, for future development,” said Andrew Joyner the State Climatologist.
Joyner said the information they collect will help emergency managers better understand the hazards the weather can cause. In turn, they can make better plans on how to correct a problem before it happens.
For example, a park in Johnson City used to flood downtown with a simple thunderstorm, but the climatologist helped develop a plan for more greenspace so the water will have somewhere to go when the waters rise.
For agriculture, they could help provide the research needed to help get federal money in the event of a drought that causes loss of crops. Something no one was really monitoring before.
“It’s very exciting to get that official recognition now, and kind of what we’ve been doing for the last couple of years and continue to grow that we really didn’t have anyone designated to support to supply information to that Drought Monitor,” said Williams Tollefson, climatologist. “And so we were working with the Southern Regional Climate Center and the National Weather Service offices. And they said that’s something that they would really like to see a good climate office do.”
The office hopes to build a network of research-grade weather stations that will update every 5 minutes to give real-time data to meteorologists and climatologists.
