The NFL is prepared to announce a regular season game to be played in Germany, with that decision coming by the Super Bowl, with that game expected to become a fixture in the annual schedule for several years to come, league sources said.
Representatives from three German cities are meeting with NFL officials in London this weekend, seeing firsthand what goes into hosting a game, as the Dolphins and Jaguars meet in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The league has made it clear that it will award a regular season game to Germany for either the 2022 or 2023 season (depending on the pandemic), and that is not expected to be a one-off, but rather a yearly opportunity to showcase the NFL in a country that has embraced the sport since back in the NFL Europe days.
That would bring a yearly minimum of international games to four -- barring outside occurrences -- with at least two games being played in London and one in Mexico. However, sources said the Jaguars, who have made London something of a second home after playing there annually for so long, are also interested in maintaining their relationship with the city by continuing to play a regular season game as well. Owner Shad Khan attempted to purchase Wembley Stadium at one point, and the Jaguars could very well end up securing an annual game at that site.
International growth is a major initiative for the NFL and a key to meeting revenue goals. The league is quite pleased with the footprint it has made in England dating back to 2007, and believes it is possible to replicate that elsewhere, particularly in Germany.
