Many Monterey playgrounds reopen - Monterey Herald

MONTEREY — Many playgrounds in Monterey have been reopened and starting Monday,  ballfields in the city will be open to those who have obtained a permit from the city’s parks and recreation director.

Starting March 15,  the city’s soccer fields, beach volleyball courts, and artificial turf volleyball courts will also be open to those who have obtained a permit.

The city made the announcement late Friday afternoon saying that City Manager Hans Uslar had signed a new emergency order.

“We are thrilled to welcome children back to the playgrounds!” Parks and Recreation Director Karen Larson said in the city’s press release. “We recommend playing it safe and following all of the posted guidance such as social distancing, wearing a face covering, and washing/sanitizing your hands before and after using the playground.”

Playgrounds were opened Friday, except Dennis the Menace Playground. According to Department of Public Health guidance, playgrounds are “designed primarily to serve nearby residents within a half a mile.” Dennis the Menace Playground is considered a regional destination according to the city’s press release.

Basketball courts remained closed until a system is in place to ensure Department of Public Health guidelines are met. Veteran’s Memorial Park campground remains open to the public, but picnic tables and group barbeque areas remain closed per Department of Public Health guidelines regarding group gatherings.

The move comes in the wake of Tuesday’s release of COVID-19 case rates for the county. The case rate dropped to 10.1 per 100,000 from 18.4, which allows additional recreational activities including certain sports to occur in the more restrictive tiers.
